The team of students from the Applied Math and Computer Science Department of Belarusian State University (including Nikita Lesnikov, Pavel Irzhavsky, and Vladimir Kerus) is the only Belarusian team qualified for the final of the World Programming Championship (ACM-ICPC), which will be held in April 2008 in Alberta (Canada).
Half-final of the Northern and Eastern European region were held on November 26-29 in St. Petersburg. 198 university teams from Russia, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia, Kirghizia and Uzbekistan participated in it. Our country was represented by the students of BSU, BSUIR, Gomel State University and Mozyr State Pedagogical University.
During the Programming Championship 2007, 6099 teams took part in the Regional competitions all over the world. Those teams represented 1756 universities from 82 countries. Belarusian State University is the arranger of the Regional competitions for the universities of Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and the Kaliningrad Region of the Russian Federation – the Western Region.
The quarterfinals of the team world programming championship the Western Region were held on October 25-26 in BSU. They were participated by 47 teams, 27 – from the leading Belarusian universities, 5 – from Estonia (Tartu and Tallin), 5 – from Lithuania (Vilnius and Kaunas), 5 – from Latvia (Riga) and 4 – from Russia (Kaliningrad). The following teams qualified for the final: BSU, BSUIR, Gomel State University and Mozyr State Pedagogical University, Vilnius University, Immanuel Kant State University of Russia, Latvian University (Riga) and Kaunas Technical University (Lithuania).
Vladimir Kerus:
Besides the team of BSU, it is worth noting that the team of Mozyr ranked 64 – taking into account that that was the first time for them. All the rest showed the usual results. We want to gain medals next year – we have the last attempt. Very strong teams will be competing in Canada – those which ranked first and second last year - universities of Warsaw and Qing Hai. But we still have 4 months ahead for preparation and we’ll do our best to give a good run to our competitors.
